When I went into my neighborhood Starbucks and said, "I'd like to buy a Starbucks Gold card, " the cashier perked up and responded, "Oh! The Gold card, yes! I'll go get one for you right away." She ran to the back storage room and seemingly rummaged around for several full minutes before emerging with a Gold card.

When I went into my near-work Starbucks and charged a grande Pike Place coffee to the Gold card, the cashier looked at it and said, "Oh! You have a Gold card!"

Why is the Gold card garnering such surprised reactions? Is it because demand is low?
